Chapter 11

Small Talk, Big Demon

“I can’t believe it,” Terri said, mouth agape. “You have a what?”

“A date,” Virginia replied, prim and proper. And barely able to contain her smile. “Tonight. At seven.”

Nice to know my lady was looking forward to our first Date later tonight. Grinning, I leaned back against Virginia’s kitchen wall, invisible, eager for their conversation to continue. It wasn’t every day a demon got to hear what his client really thought of him. I had to admit, I was curious. I’d followed her home last night, after the altercation in Albany, but her routine had barely changed. Other than smiling to herself more than usual, she still acted like a sleepwalker as she’d gone about her evening customs. Maybe more dazed than exhausted, but certainly nothing to really make note of.

“About time,” Terri said. “So? Details!”

Virginia searched in the refrigerator before taking out a tub of cream cheese, an oily package, and a jar of capers. “What do you want to know?”

“His name, for starters.”

“Don.” Virginia didn’t say anything else, but her smile stretched into a grin.

Heh. My lady was a tease.

Terri, seated at the kitchen table, let out a snort. “More, damn it! What’s he do? Is he a doctor? You should date a doctor.”

“No, but he works in health services.”

Terri took a sip from her coffee cup, grumbled, “You’re enjoying this…”

“Don’t know what you mean,” Virginia practically sang.

“Quit stalling! Come on, what is he? Oh God, don’t say he’s a male nurse…”

“Nope.” Virginia dropped her supplies on the counter, then went back to retrieve a tomato and an onion and placed them next to her stockpile of food. Glancing over her shoulder, she said, “He’s a massage therapist.”

“Ooh. Good with his hands.”

“I wouldn’t know.”

Terri clucked her tongue. “Extrapolate, Vee. He’s a masseur, thus, he works with his hands. On clients’ bodies. Hee! I’m all sorts of giddy for you!”

I liked the way Terri thought.

“He’s a nice guy,” Virginia said, bringing the capers, cheese, and the package to the table, setting everything down. “Polite, and funny, and strong…”

“Strong?” Terri unwrapped the paper, revealing sliced lox. “Ooh. Did he use those strong hands on your shoulders? Give you a back massage?”

“Stop that. He beat up a mugger.”

“You were mugged?”

I winced; Terri’s voice had risen three octaves and probably had just deafened all the dogs in the area.

“Almost. Don stopped him. Disarmed him, knocked him out.”

Terri almost fell out of her chair. “Holy God, the mugger was armed? As in, armed and dangerous?”

Not as dangerous as her voice. I shook my head to clear it. Bishop’s balls, she could teach the banshees a thing or two.

“Yes, but Don took care of it.” Virginia pulled out a small tray from under the counter, then took out a knife from the butcher’s block. “You should’ve seen him. He knew exactly what to do. Me, I barely called the police without peeing myself, I was so scared. But him?” She let out a happy sigh, and my stomach tightened in pleasure from the sound.
